They are far more complex and devious than ANYONE can imagine.
And I partially agree with Dr Cronin about "why men appear far more successful than women". Even after you correct for the undeniable sexism and other cultural factors that still occur, men do appear more exceptional than women. And I agree with her argument as well. Ever since high school, I've always felt women were as a rule, smarter then men, but that the smartest people were men. My evidence then was how successful the girls were in my math classes. Most of them could sail rings around most of the boys. But the very best students were all boys.
The same goes even in that bastion of female dominance, the kitchen. Most women are better cooks than most men, but the greatest chefs are mostly men. Anecdotal, cultural? Of course. But I trust my instincts in these matters.
