It is preceded by this: Retreating into the [religious] mystery that cannot be approached is, from the point of view of science, unethical

We had a lot more confidence in science in the 50's, the 60's a little less in the 70's then there was Challenger, Chernobyl in the 80's....

Science leads to mistakes but we can learn from them. It should not let religion take more place than it had when science was seen as a positive thing.
