Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome November 21, 2012 7:05 pm Robert

Stumbled on to this one while following the link below about Fringe to Giant Freaking Robot. It’s the first I’ve heard about a new BSG, and apparently part of the reason is that it’s the beneficiary of that Syffy magic touch. First it was to be a series, then they chickened out and downgraded it to a Web series of 10-minute episodes. Recently they announced that they’d string together the webisodes into a single TV movie next year. Same as it ever was at Syffy.

The first four webisodes are available on youtube, starting with episode 1. I just watched it, WTH it’s only ten minutes, and it looks like it’s worth continuing. It’s a prequel, a young Bill Adama joins Galactica as a hotshot rookie, you know the drill (see “Top Gun” ad nauseum). Lots of pretty eye candy, both digital and mothballed BSG sets.

I remember being pretty down on Ron Moore and his BSG after the deux ex machina ending. But I’ve recently streamed the whole series again from beginning to end, and this time, without the long breaks and irregular broadcast schedule to interfere with comprehension, I perhaps was a little harsh.

The main thing about the religious theme of the ending is that it actually wasn’t a last-minute improvisation. The second time through, I saw a multitude of hints and harbingers, including a couple of out-and-out miracles. I think that at the time I refused to take them literally, and just blithely assumed that a material explanation would eventually be forthcoming. But the truth is, the Cylon monogod was pulling everybody’s strings from the beginning of the series. The ending actually was foreordained.

Mea culpa. Anyway, enjoy the webisodes.
